Silver gray blending at Elevate Salon + Spa, Charlottesville VA

Color only where you need it

Gray usually shows first at the part and hairline, and regrowth can make color look faded long before the rest of your hair needs anything. A root touch up treats just that new growth. Your stylist mixes one shade to match the color you already wear, or a slightly deeper one if you want richer roots, and applies it through the regrowth only. Your lengths and ends are left alone, which keeps them from building up darker with every visit.

This is the maintenance service in the Go Darker + Gray Cover family. If your ends have faded too, or you want the whole head deeper, all over color carries the shade from roots to ends. If you want depth and contrast rather than one flat shade, lowlights weave deeper pieces through the hair. The consultation that opens every service is where you and your stylist decide which fits.

Root touch ups are offered across the team, including Justin, whose specialties include dimensional gray coverage, Rachel for brunettes and reds, Nicole and Madison for dimensional brunettes, and Mei Leigh for dimensional color, and others on the team.

  • Coverage at the regrowth

Color goes only on new growth at the scalp, so gray at your part and hairline is covered while your lengths stay as they are, never turning dull or overly dark.

  • One shade, matched to you

A root touch up uses a single color, matched to your current shade or taken slightly deeper, so roots blend into the rest of your hair instead of sitting as a visible band.

  • A blow dry to finish

Every root touch up ends with a blow dry style, so you leave with coverage you can see and hair ready for the rest of your day, not damp and pulled back.

  • Built for steady upkeep

Because it treats only regrowth, this is the service gray coverage guests return for regularly. Your stylist will plan the timing with you based on how quickly your gray shows through.

More about gray Coverage Root Touch Up

What to expect at your appointment

Check in with the Guest Care Team at the front desk or on the iPad, then settle in with a latte or sparkling water. Your stylist starts with a consultation about where your gray shows most and if you want roots matched or a touch deeper. Color is applied section by section at the regrowth and processes while you relax under a cozy blanket. After a rinse at the shampoo bowl, your stylist finishes with a blow dry style, with one guest at a time throughout.

Aftercare and maintenance

Help your coverage last with a color protecting shampoo, cool rinses and a little less washing. High heat can shift color, so use a heat protectant and turn your irons down. The retail wall carries the Signature Elevate line, which is sodium chloride free and sulfate free, plus Redken and Olaplex, and your stylist can point you to what suits your hair. Booking your next touch up before you leave keeps regrowth from catching you off guard.

How pricing works

Each color service includes a standard product allotment. If your regrowth is longer or denser and needs more color, extra product may be added, and your stylist will talk it through before starting. Pricing also varies by the stylist you book, since each keeps their own menu. See the Service Menu for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How is a root touch up different from all over color?

A root touch up puts one shade on your regrowth only. All over color runs from roots to ends to deepen, blend gray or shift tone across the whole head. If only your roots have changed, the touch up is usually the right fit.

Will my gray be fully covered?

Covering gray at the roots with a single color is exactly what this service does. At the consultation your stylist looks at how much gray you have and tells you honestly what to expect. To soften gray instead, ask about lowlights.

How often should I come back?

It depends on how fast your hair grows and how much gray you have, since more gray makes regrowth noticeable sooner. Your stylist will plan the timing with you and can help you book your next visit before you leave.

Can I go darker with a root touch up?

Yes. This service can deepen your natural color at the roots as well as cover gray. If you want your whole head darker, including faded ends, all over color is the better choice, because a root touch up leaves your lengths untouched.

Do I need to confirm my appointment?

Yes, please. You get a confirmation email when you book and a reminder by email and text, and the salon asks you to confirm a day or two ahead. A card on file is needed for color services. Text the salon if plans change.
